KATHMANDU: The Minimum Wage Fixation Committee has expressed concern about the injustices faced by journalists during health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
The media houses laying off journalists, pushing them to take unpaid leave, and assigning them to inconvenient departments and branches had come to the Committee’s attention, according to the Committee’s board of directors’ virtual meeting on Thursday.
The meeting, which was chaired by Committee Chair Rajendra Aryal, urged all parties involved to stop such practices and ensure their professional safety.
The Committee has also urged media companies to pay due salaries to working journalists who have not yet received their minimum compensation, citing concerns from journalists who have yet to receive their due.
According to Aryal, the Committee recommended that the government and health institutions provide care or reimburse treatment costs to journalists who contract COVID-19 while performing their duties. Frontline journalists have been advised to take the requisite COVID-19 precautions when performing their duties.
