On Wednesday, a single bench of Justice Tej Bahadur KC asked the defendants to provide a written clarification during a preliminary hearing on the issue.
Tulasiram Pokharel, Ram Bahadur Shahi, and Santosh Bhandari filed a writ with the Supreme Court, requesting that the project be halted. They claim that the project will affect millions of people in the province of Gandaki and the river basin. The writ further contends that the diversion project violates federalism’s core principles.
Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel launched the project’s office in Butwal, bringing attention to the initiative.
By diverting 80 percent of the water from the Kaligandaki River to the Tinau River, the project hopes to irrigate 107,000 hectares of land in Lumbini and generate 125 MW of energy.
