Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli reshuffled his cabinet on Friday evening, causing a huge shakeup in the country’s federal administration.
In summary, Oli accomplished the following:
- Induct ten ministers from the divided Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal’s Mahantha Thakur-led side, including Deputy Prime Minister Rajendra Mahato.
- With the exception of four ministers, all members of the current cabinet should be removed.
- Promote Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel to the position of most senior DPM, and induct Raghubir Mahaseth, his party’s comparatively junior leader, as another DPM (total DPMs: 3)
- Assign Sher Bahadur Tamang to manage the country’s Health Ministry, which will play a critical role in containing the Covid-19 outbreak. Keep seven essential portfolios in his possession: defense, home affairs, tourism and civil aviation, communications and information technology, federal affairs and general administration, agriculture and livestock development, industry and commerce, and federal affairs and general administration.
The reshuffled cabinet now includes seven members from Oli’s CPN-UML and ten from the JSPN’s divided group. As a result, Oli is expected to choose several ministers from his own party to fill up the portfolios that he currently holds.
President Bidya Devi Bhandai administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly appointed DPMs and ministers at Sheetal Niwas. PM Oli also swore in the ministers of state at the same ceremony.
As of Friday, the reshuffled cabinet included the following members:
