The KP Sharma Oli government has released an ordinance to amend the Citizenship Act, which is likely to exacerbate the party’s political divisions and rekindle a debate among people.
The government appears to have attempted to resolve issues posed by the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal in the ordinance in order to woo the party to his side.
According to reports, the ordinance provides for citizenship by descent for children of people by birth. Citizenship by birth is currently the only choice for children of citizens by birth, not citizenship by descent.
According to the constitution, high state offices such as president, vice president, prime minister, chief justice, speaker of the House of Representatives, chief of state (governor), chief minister, speaker of a provincial assembly, and chief of a security agency may only be held by people by descent.
