The Supreme Court has denied media reports that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana met for an hour Monday night.
Several news outlets, including Image Channel and Nepal Samaya, announced on Monday late night that PM Oli invited CJ Rana to his residence for a meeting, citing anonymous sources. The reports sparked concern after 146 members of the dissolved House of Representatives petitioned Oli on Monday afternoon.
However, in a statement issued today, the Supreme Court’s joint spokesperson, Devendra Dhakal, said that the reports were inaccurate and expressed concern about their effect on people’s confidence in the independent judiciary.
According to the statement, the court is critical, informed, and attentive to the importance of an independent and competent judiciary and the rule of law.
